Democrats Find It 'Concerning' That DOGE Employees Are Still in Federal Government Roles

Concerns Raised by Congressional Democrats Over DOGE Employees in Federal Roles

On Wednesday, Congressional Democrats expressed their discomfort in a letter to the Trump administration regarding the ongoing involvement of DOGE employees in the federal bureaucracy. They noted that while Elon Musk has stepped away, his influence still lingers, as DOGE and its staff seem to aim for a permanent foothold in the government.

Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), along with Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA), pointed out that DOGE employees are embedded in important agency positions. This, they argue, threatens the effectiveness of the government in serving the needs of the American people. The letter was addressed to Scott Kpoe, the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and Russell Vert, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Democrats described the involvement of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with federal officials as “surprising.” They emphasized that the presence of these employees in key federal roles could disrupt the normal functioning of government.

The OPM, which oversees federal hiring practices, stated that it will review all requests regarding the appointment of current or recent political appointees to permanent roles. The goal is to ensure compliance with the Merit System Principles and the Civil Service Act.

In response, a representative for DOGE maintained that affiliated individuals have not unlawfully interfered in their career roles, emphasizing a commitment to fact-based oversight.

Concerns from Democrats come at a time when DOGE’s position in Washington has evolved since Musk concluded his term as a “special government employee” in late May, having reached the time limit for that role. At that point, President Trump expressed appreciation for Musk and his team, noting that most of them would remain involved.

Musk had promised upon his departure that this was just a new beginning for DOGE, not an end.

Democrats also warned that transferring DOGE staff into permanent federal service might breach laws prohibiting political influences and loyalty tests in hiring practices.
