Fetterman Column: Democrats Shouldn't Just Be Anti-Trump

Fetterman Defends His Stance Amid Party Changes

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) has spoken out about his beliefs while also critiquing aspects of his own party. In a recent op-ed, he expressed concern that Democrats are shifting away from traditional positions, although he insists that his values remain unchanged.

In the piece titled “I haven’t changed. What has changed is this,” Fetterman emphasized that collaboration is essential to progress. He is committed to representing all residents of Pennsylvania, regardless of their political affiliations. The senator highlighted bipartisan efforts on various issues, including border security, government funding, and social programs, while resisting the push for ideological uniformity within the Democratic Party.

Reflecting on his political journey, Fetterman recounted winning the mayoral election in Braddock, Pennsylvania, a place he described as “one of the poorest towns” in the state, which has seen a significant population decline. He stated that his focus has always been about delivering real results rather than engaging in partisan disputes.

Fetterman critiqued his party’s current identity, which he believes is overly focused on opposing President Trump. He stated, “My party cannot simply disagree with what President Donald Trump says,” adding that unproductive infighting is not what voters want. Instead, they are looking for tangible solutions.

When it comes to immigration, Fetterman expressed support for a 2024 border bill aimed at managing immigration levels, noting a desire to avoid a significant influx as seen previously. He also underscored his backing for laws addressing fentanyl trafficking, mentioning his role in a key bill on the issue. “Those who came here illegally and committed violent crimes should be deported. Full stop,” he declared.

Fetterman defended his decision to vote against the government shutdown, arguing that essential workers and citizens shouldn’t suffer due to political games. He acknowledged facing backlash from some Democratic supporters but felt the need to prioritize keeping the government operational.

The senator dedicated a considerable part of his op-ed to endorsing Israel amid the ongoing conflicts with Hamas. He expressed commitment to combating terrorism and praised the administration’s efforts against Iran’s threats.

Fetterman suggested that previously common Democratic positions on matters like border security and support for Israel have become “increasingly toxic” due to what he describes as catering to the more extreme elements of the party. He noted that he has faced protests from constituents both in Washington, D.C., and at his home for his views.

Despite these challenges, he maintains alignment with many Democratic values, identifying as strongly pro-choice and pro-labor, among other positions. Fetterman humorously remarked on the idea of switching parties, asserting he’d make a poor Republican due to his strong Democratic voting record.

The senator pointed to various bipartisan achievements with Republican colleagues, including significant funding for infrastructure projects in Pennsylvania. He collaborated with Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy to secure about $1 billion for transportation needs and worked with other Republican senators on a diverse range of issues.

This op-ed arises during ongoing discussions about Fetterman’s role within the Democratic Party. Recently, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) reiterated that Fetterman was elected to represent the Democratic Party in the Senate and should continue to align with the wishes of Pennsylvanians.

CNN commentator Van Jones also supported Fetterman, expressing bewilderment that someone who is a proponent of both Israel and controlled immigration could be perceived as better suited for the Republican Party. He categorized Fetterman as a “moderate Democrat,” arguing that such voices are needed within the party.
