Rodgers to Sit Out Preseason Opener

Aaron Rodgers, the new quarterback for the Steelers, won’t make his debut this weekend. The former MVP was sidelined during the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, with coach Mike Tomlin confirming that multiple starters, including wide receiver DK Metcalf and linebacker TJ Watt, would also be resting.

“We’ve identified players who won’t participate,” Tomlin stated, according to Mark Kaboly from “The Pat McAfee Show.” “It’s not injury-related; it’s about giving them fewer opportunities to take off, honestly.” This direct approach emphasizes a focus on managing the team’s seasoned players.

Interestingly, Rodgers, who last played in a preseason game with the Jets a couple of years back, was initially listed as the starter, with veteran Mason Rudolph following closely. Rookie Will Howard is in third place but is currently sidelined due to injuries, leaving former Dolphin QB Skyler Thompson next in line.

At 41 years old, Rodgers officially moved beyond his quiet stint with the Jets this offseason, signing with Pittsburgh for a one-year contract worth $13.65 million. His admiration for Tomlin played a significant role in his decision. “I’ve been a fan of him for a long time. The Steelers are one of the iconic franchises in the league,” he mentioned.

Rodgers, who kicked off his professional journey in Green Bay back in 2005, had put football on the backburner for a while due to personal matters. However, he felt a shift for the better when he signed in June. “Things got a little better, so I felt ready to dive in,” he explained, reflecting on the timing of his return.

During the contract discussions, he had fruitful conversations with Tomlin and General Manager Omar Khan, despite previously hinting that this season could be his last. When he finally gets on the field as a Steeler, he will do so as a newlywed—having recently confirmed his marriage to Britanni.

Last season, Rodgers participated in all 17 regular-season games for the Jets, throwing for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However, he missed most of the previous season due to an Achilles injury sustained in Week 1.

The Steelers will play the Buccaneers next week before heading to the Panthers for the preseason finale on August 21st. Interestingly, they will face off against the Jets in the opening game of the regular season on September 7th.
