California Toy Store Robbed of $30,000 Doll
A group of thieves made quite a scene at a California toy store, according to video footage and the store owner. They broke in and stole a highly sought-after Labubu doll valued at $30,000.
Four individuals shattered the glass doors of the Lapuente store around 1:30 AM on Wednesday. This particular doll has gained viral popularity, described as a mix between a Cabbage Patch doll and a gremlin with bunny ears.
“We worked so hard to get to this point,” the owner mentioned, expressing disappointment over the loss. Surveillance footage captured one burglar passing by various electronics, quickly zeroing in on the whimsical dolls in the shop.
These dolls are designed by illustrator Casing Lung, whose creations have been endorsed by celebrities like Rihanna and Dua Lipa, with some selling for over $100,000 just recently.
“It’s really disheartening. They just came in and took everything,” co-owner Joanna Avendano shared. “We’re still in shock. If anyone can help identify these thieves, please reach out.” She emphasized that the shop, which opened just two months ago, may have caught the thieves’ attention after announcing a restock on social media.
Before the burglary, Avendano noticed a truck parked nearby, which she suspects could be connected to the incident. “I had that feeling, you know, like something was off,” she recalled.
Usually, these dolls retail for as much as $500 each and are based on characters from Lung’s popular book series, The Monsters.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the robbery.
