Is Shedeur Sanders being set up for failure in the opener against the Browns?

Cleveland Browns Face Carolina Panthers

Tonight, the Cleveland Browns are set to go up against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Surprisingly, rookie draft pick Shedale Sanders will be starting as quarterback, marking his debut in the NFL.

Some critics, including Stephen A. Smith, seem to think there’s a chance he’s being set up for failure. Smith expressed his doubts on a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take.”

“I think he’s set to fail,” he stated. “If you consider that he’s played in only 11 practices—against the third team, no less—putting him in the starting lineup now feels a bit off, doesn’t it?”

He continued, questioning the lack of leadership with the first team, and suggested that it looks like there’s a push for him to fail. “I’m not necessarily suggesting it’s all on the coach or even the general manager, but the owner, Mr. Haslam, well, that’s a different story altogether.”

In response, Jason Whitlock accused Smith and other broadcasters of framing Sanders as a victim, which he argues is misleading.

Whitlock pointed out that considering the injuries of the Browns’ top two quarterbacks, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel, Sanders is in the spotlight, not because he lacks capability but due to the circumstances surrounding the team. He seems to suggest that this opportunity might allow Sanders to shine, rather than placing him as a victim of a flawed system.

He emphasized that there seems to be a trend from Smith and others to portray black men, like Sanders, as victims instead of highlighting their competitive nature and opportunities for success. Whitlock believes that Sanders’s situation shouldn’t be seen through a lens of victimhood but rather as a moment for him to prove himself.

Whitlock’s commentary indicates that he sees potential in Sanders’s name recognition as Deion Sanders’s son. “It’s quite unbelievable—this is a moment for Shedale Sanders,” he remarked.

Smith and others, according to Whitlock, seem to have fallen under the spell of explaining Sanders’s situation as a product of his father’s legacy, rather than exploring his individual merits.
