James Lovell, NASA Astronaut, Passes Away at 97
Former NASA astronaut James Lovell has died at the age of 97 in Lake Forest, Illinois. The announcement was made in a press release on Friday.
Lovell was in charge of the Apollo 13 mission in April 1970 when an explosion occurred during the journey to the moon. Shawn Duffy, the acting NASA administrator, issued a statement reflecting on Lovell’s legacy.
Duffy expressed condolences to Lovell’s family, saying that his life and work have impacted millions over the decades. “His remarkable courage showed us how we could turn a potential disaster into a success,” he noted.
The challenges Lovell faced were famously depicted in the 1995 film “Apollo 13,” where he was portrayed by actor Tom Hanks, along with fellow astronauts played by Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon.
In a tribute, NASA conveyed sadness over Lovell’s passing, highlighting how his bravery under pressure has inspired countless individuals and shaped the path to the moon and beyond. Duffy acknowledged Lovell’s pivotal roles, particularly as the Command Module pilot for Apollo 8, which demonstrated that reaching the moon was achievable.
