Paxton aims to oust 13 Texas Democrats from office

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has initiated a legal action regarding the situation involving 13 Democratic lawmakers who fled Texas to hamper the passage of a new GOP-friendly congressional map. This lawsuit was filed on Friday and seeks a ruling from the Texas Supreme Court declaring that these lawmakers have vacated their offices after about 50 lawmakers left the state on Sunday.

Among those affected are state representatives such as Ron Reynolds, Vicki Goodwin, Gina Hinojosa, and James Tallarico, to name a few.

The lawsuit claims, “When members of Congress ignored the arrest warrant, refused to perform their duties and announced they intend to hinder Congress from fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities, it showed their intention to abandon their offices.” This, it argues, could give minority factions undue power to disrupt the legislative process.

In a post on X, Paxton referred to the Democrats as “co-sick people” who are intentionally obstructing constitutional procedures.

Earlier this week, Governor Greg Abbott (R) also filed a lawsuit related to this matter, indicating that efforts are underway to remove one of the lawmakers, Wu, from their position.

Several of the affected Democrats responded to the lawsuit with condemnation. One stated, “Texas Republicans have never been more desperate. First, they issued a warrant for our arrest, then told supporters to ‘hunt us down.'” They also expressed concerns about the alignment of the government and party to undermine electoral processes.

Tallarico also spoke out, stating, “Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit to force me out of office, but this seat doesn’t belong to him or me—it belongs to the people.”

Republicans are eager to reclaim some ground from Democrats while trying to piece together a special session. They aim to pass a new house map that could offer the party several opportunities in the upcoming elections while also addressing priorities like flood recovery.

In response to the Republicans’ push for new maps, Democrats have stated that they are not currently engaging with those discussions. Amid the tension, there are calls from Republicans for the arrest of fleeing Democrats and talks about payment deposits being made differently, which only adds to the swirling controversies in Texas politics.
