Parents call for border security after daughter reportedly killed by undocumented immigrant

Michelle and Joe Abraham’s lives took a devastating turn in January 2025 when their 20-year-old daughter Katie died in a hit-and-run. The incident was allegedly caused by a Guatemalan citizen who was in the country illegally and suspected of being under the influence. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a video featuring Katie’s parents reflecting on their loss.

“Katie was a remarkable person. She had such a vibrant personality and made everyone feel noticed,” Joe shared in the video. “Her humor was amazing, and her wit really stood out.”

On the day of the accident, Katie was with her friend Chloe Poltsin, waiting at a Stoplight when a car, now believed to be driven by an undocumented immigrant, struck them and fled. Katie tragically lost her life at the scene, while Chloe sustained injuries and was hospitalized the following day.

In a press conference, Joe emphasized that if not for the current sanctuary policies, “These two young women would still be alive.” He criticized the environmental circumstances leading to Katie’s death, stressing they could have been avoidable.

Reports from the Urbana Police Department detail the tragic accident, noting that the speed of the suspect’s vehicle approached 80 mph. The suspect, identified as Julio Cakul Bor, is facing serious charges including leaving the scene of a crash, reckless murder, and driving under the influence resulting in death.

Joe expressed the depth of their grief, remarking that if Bol had not been allowed entry into the country, Katie would still be with them. He noted the struggle of coping with the absence of their daughter. “You can’t really put it into words, it’s just this huge void,” he added.

Michelle revealed that she learned about the suspect’s illegal status only days after the incident, which complicated her understanding of the tragedy. “It’s hard to wrap your mind around the fact that this person could still be free,” she said.

In May, Bor was charged with multiple counts related to possessing false documentation. The consequences he faces, should he be convicted, include a significant prison sentence and hefty fines.

As discussions around immigration policy continue, the Abrahams’ story becomes a focal point for broader debates. Michelle reiterated the need for responsibility in enforcing existing laws, highlighting that inadequacies in the system contributed to their loss.
