Tragic Shooting Near CDC in Atlanta
The DeKalb County Police Department has reported the death of Officer David Rose, who was shot while responding to a gunman near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
Officer Rose sustained injuries on Friday during the incident at the CDC campus. The suspected gunman, whose name has yet to be disclosed, was also killed at the scene.
Following the shooting, Rose was rushed to Emory University Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to the police department, Rose had joined the military just last September and is survived by his expectant wife and two children.
The situation unfolded just before 5 p.m., as a man opened fire near the CDC. When law enforcement arrived, they found Rose critically injured and heard additional gunfire from a nearby CVS pharmacy.
Upon entering the store, officers discovered the shooter upstairs with at least one gunshot wound. Police Chief Darling Siebaum mentioned that it remains unclear whether these wounds were inflicted by police or were self-inflicted.
“I want to commend the bravery of all the law enforcement officers in the area,” Cielbaum stated. “When our community called for help, they stepped up without hesitation, collaborating swiftly to neutralize the threat.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, along with the FBI’s Atlanta Office, is currently handling the case.
Interim Police Chief Greg Padric emphasized Rose’s dedication to the community in his remarks.
“At this moment, we ask for the community’s prayers for his family, friends, and everyone at the DeKalb County Police Department,” he said.
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, stating that the loss of Officer Rose is devastating.
“His service and memory will not be forgotten. We extend our thoughts to his family and fellow officers as they navigate this painful time,” Kemp shared on social media.
Rose leaves behind a pregnant wife and two children.
“I have a wife who is without her husband tonight,” DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson told the press. “There’s a fatherless child on the way, and this pain is shared by many in our community.”
