Dr. Phil Defends Sydney Sweeney Amid Controversy
On a recent episode of “real-time,” talk show host Dr. Phil expressed his opposition to the backlash surrounding actress Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle ads, which some critics deemed “silly.” He mentioned that he would purchase jeans for the women in his family to support Sweeney.
Dr. Phil, whose full name is Phil McGraw, took issue with those comparing the “great jeans” advertisements to the Holocaust. He referred to such comparisons as deeply offensive, stating, “To say that people get hooked on that ad, that she has good jeans, and equate it with the Holocaust is an absolute insult.” He emphasized the tragedy of six million lives lost, asserting that likening this to a jeans campaign was, well, just wrong.
In his segment, Dr. Phil pledged to buy “those jeans for all women” in his family as a gesture of solidarity with the actress.
Before Dr. Phil’s comments, Bill Maher discussed the matter, criticizing the discourse surrounding Sweeney’s political leanings. Maher pointed out that the actress’s identification as a Republican should not be a source of scandal. He noted, “Sydney Sweeney came out as a Republican. This is the 27-year-old big movie star from ‘Euphoria,’ and now there’s all this fuss over her ad.” He reflected on how this portrayal was unsettling, suggesting it shouldn’t be seen negatively just because of political affiliation.
As the conversation continued, Dr. Phil acknowledged that perceptions of political labels can vary widely. He suggested that while being labeled a Republican might carry a stigma in Hollywood, it might not elsewhere, like in the Midwest, where such terms are seen differently.
