Acid Attack Investigation in Honolulu

Authorities in Hawaii are searching for a suspect involved in an acid attack that occurred in Honolulu on Friday night, leaving the victim in critical condition.

As reported by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD), officers arrived at the scene in Chinatown shortly after 10 PM following a report of an assault.

A 30-year-old man crossing the street said an unknown individual approached him and threw a liquid in his face. The Honolulu Fire Department later confirmed that the substance was sulfuric acid, a highly corrosive chemical that can cause severe burns to skin, eyes, and internal tissues.

According to HPD, emergency responders transported the victim to the hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries. Unfortunately, detectives were unable to interview him to gain further details about the incident.

“Initial investigations indicate that the victim did not know the suspect,” a department spokesperson stated. “Detectives are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area and looking for additional witnesses.”

HPD categorized the incident as a first-degree assault, which is a felony in Hawaii. Detectives are still trying to ascertain the motive behind the assault, and it remains uncertain whether it might be classified as a hate crime.

The suspect is described as a six-foot tall male, last seen carrying a red bottle while wearing a blue shirt and having a camera slung around his neck. The investigation is still ongoing.
