Ukrainian Drone Attack in Saratov Claims Life and Damages Properties

A Ukrainian drone strike in Saratov, a region in southern Russia, has resulted in one fatality and damage to various apartments and industrial sites, according to the local governor on Sunday.

Roman Busargin shared updates on the Telegram app, indicating that residents were evacuated following the incident, which involved debris from the drone hitting three residential units overnight.

“Several residents required medical attention,” Busargin mentioned. “Help was provided on-site, and one person was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, one individual has died.”

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Russian air defense had managed to intercept 121 Ukrainian drones overnight, eight of which were from the Saratov area, though the figures don’t clarify how many were launched by Ukraine.

Busargin did not offer specifics regarding the industrial facilities that suffered damage. However, social media posts depicted substantial black smoke billowing from what seems to be an industrial zone.

Reuters verified that the locations shown in a video matched known satellite images of the area, yet the timing of the footage remained unconfirmed.

Ukrainian sources, including RBK-Ukraine, suggested that an oil refinery in Saratov city, which serves as the regional administrative hub, caught fire as a result of the attack, but these claims could not be independently verified.

No official statements have emerged from Russia regarding the incident. The Rosun company, linked to Rosneft in Saratov, had previously halted operations at the MM refinery due to safety concerns following a earlier drone assault.

According to the Russian Shott-Telegram Channel, which often relays information from security and law enforcement, several explosions were reported around Saratov and Engels, two cities separated by the Volga River.

In a separate development, Russia’s Civil Aviation Authority, Rosaviatia, announced that flights to and from Saratov would be temporarily suspended for about two hours early Sunday to maintain air safety.

Both Ukraine and Russia have denied intentionally targeting civilians during the ongoing conflict, which escalated significantly with Russia’s large-scale military action against Ukraine in February 2022. While Ukraine argues that strikes within Russia are pivotal to disrupting Moscow’s military initiatives, especially targeting energy and military infrastructure, Russia has maintained its stance on defensive measures.
