Yankees broadcasters crack 'Seinfeld' jokes while Jason Alexander pitches

Yankees Face Astros Pitcher ‘Jason Alexander’

During a game on Sunday in the Bronx, a curious matchup unfolded as the New York Yankees battled with a Houston Astros pitcher sharing the name Jason Alexander. This name, of course, sparks memories of the actor who portrayed the “Assistant to the Travel Secretary” in the beloved sitcom “Seinfeld.”

As the pitcher warmed up, Yankee announcer Michael Kay and former Yankees player Paul O’Neill—who himself guest-starred on “Seinfeld”—made light of the situation by referencing lines from the show in their scouting report on Alexander.

A playful remark noted that Alexander once quipped, “It’s me, not you,” humorously highlighting a scoreless outing against the Miami Marlins. It was also noted, with perhaps a touch of drama, that “the sea was mad” and “the world is clashing,” owing to the amusing coincidence.

O’Neill also shared that the Yankees have a George Costanza bobblehead giveaway planned for August 21st. In this game, Alexander performed well, managing a near no-hit performance across six innings, contributing to a 7-1 win for the Astros.

Interestingly, O’Neill appeared in a “Seinfeld” episode during its seventh season, showcasing several famed Yankees while the show enjoyed its heyday in the ’90s. One memorable plotline featured Kramer promising a young hospital patient that a specific player would hit two home runs in a game, all to retrieve a special birthday card from team owner George Steinbrenner.

As O’Neill reflected, it seems there’s still a bit of nostalgia tied to those episodes. He joked that perhaps they’re running the reruns more often these days—“It’s a nice reminder that you’re part of that legacy,” he said last year.

Throughout its run, the series included appearances from other Yankees like Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams, though a stunt double filled in for Steinbrenner, whose real footage has never aired. O’Neill had a notable career, recording 15 multi-homer games, although it’s worth noting that the fictional game in “Seinfeld” didn’t feature one of those notable hits.

In the backdrop of this jab at the past, the Yankees recently retired the number 21 jersey, previously worn by Latroy Hawkins, who faced some disapproval when he donned it in 2008. O’Neill played with the Yankees from 1993 to 2001, fostering a unique blend of sports and pop culture that still resonates today.
