Buttigieg believes Democrats should embrace Trump's commitment to IVF coverage.

On a recent episode of Pod Save America, former Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg suggested that Democrats could benefit from embracing former President Trump’s proposal to expand insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.

Co-host John Favreau posed a question about whether Democrats should adopt Trump’s campaign promise to have insurance companies cover IVF and fertility treatments. Buttigieg responded, “I think that’s a good policy. If we’re truly committed to supporting families, we need to ensure that is part of what private healthcare offers.”

Buttigieg voiced that it seemed strange to oppose the idea of encouraging people to start families, particularly when financial constraints are a significant barrier. “It’s odd to think this way, but I don’t see why we should dismiss those looking to promote family growth, especially if the hindrance is tied to costs and access issues.”

Favreau referenced a report that indicated Trump had not followed through on his pledges regarding IVF treatments from his second-term campaign. The article noted that “the White House has no plans to mandate IVF care despite those campaign promises.” In response, White House spokesman Abigail Jackson stated that Trump was still committed to expanding access to fertility treatments for individuals trying to start families.

Buttigieg continued his critique, noting that Democrats need to improve how they engage with voters. He mentioned, “After the 2024 election, my party’s outreach has been lacking, and there’s a tendency to overemphasize diversity without truly understanding what it means for everyone.” He concluded with a nod to how this disconnect may drive some voters toward Trump Republicans.

Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order aimed at lowering out-of-pocket expenses related to IVF and other fertility treatments, instructing the National Policy Council to explore ways of making these services more affordable.

Buttigieg’s comments highlight ongoing discussions about the accessibility of healthcare and the necessity for political figures to connect with their constituents on these relevant issues.
