Trump’s Second Term: A Shifting Landscape
A reporter from the New York Times highlighted on Friday that President Donald Trump appears to be “more effective” during his second term in office.
In a discussion on “Washington Week with the Atlantic,” some prominent journalists, including ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent John Carl and New York Times White House Correspondent Tyler Pager, were contemplating Trump’s recent announcement regarding a new ballroom at the White House, estimated to cost around $200 million.
Carl pointed out, “He’s planning to construct a 90,000-square-foot ballroom. For context, the current White House is only 55,000 square feet. So, you can say he has big ambitions. I think this really illustrates the difference between the first and second terms.”
Reflecting on Trump’s Presidency
Carl elaborated that Trump’s initial term felt more like “a kind of in and out,” suggesting that the changes he made at that time were, in some ways, fleeting.
The ABC News Chief remarked that in this second season, Trump is making more substantial changes that will resonate beyond his presidency. Pager agreed, noting that Trump currently has a more dedicated staff compared to his first administration.
“It’s partly because he understands how the government operates now,” Pager explained. “One major difference between his first and second terms is that he had many people in the government back then who were trying to undermine his efforts. Now, he’s surrounded by individuals who fully support his agenda and are there to help him.”
Recent Developments in Trump’s Term
John Carl also mentioned that Trump has now been in office for about six months. It raises the question of what highlights might emerge from this period.
During the same conversation, Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg queried Pager, especially focusing on the dynamics of Trump’s influence in light of the upcoming elections in 2024.
Pager remarked, “Yes, he’s much more effective at actualizing his agenda this time around. His aides and staff have been preparing for this term, which has enabled them to execute a series of executive orders early on. They understood their objectives, which allowed them to achieve many of their goals quite rapidly.”
