Stars of ‘The Gilded Age’ Share Insights on Peggy’s Engagement to Dr. Kirkland: “He Brought Tears to the Crew”

The Golden Age Season 3 Finale Recap

The season 3 finale of The Golden Age sees Peggy Scott, played by Denne Benton, finally achieving a long-deserved moment of happiness. After facing relentless hardships, Peggy emerges victorious, but not without having to confront her painful past once again.

In the episode titled “My Mind Is Made Up,” Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica) confronts Peggy about her troubled history. She bravely reveals that she married her first love without her parents’ consent, and, tragically, had to give up her child from that relationship after her father intervened. Peggy recounts attending her son’s funeral in Philadelphia, a moment filled with sorrow that truly encapsulates her struggles.

Dr. Kirkland takes in this heavy information, leaving Peggy to process it all. Overwhelmed, she breaks down into tears in her mother Dorothy’s (Audrama K Donald) arms.

“At that moment, Peggy thinks it’s the end,” Benton shared. “The only thing holding her back is this unforgivable part of her past, whether or not it is her fault.”

Benton explained that Peggy’s tears symbolize not just the lost love she has for Kirkland, but also the accumulation of her past pains. “It reopens her wounds—trauma from her parents, her lost children, and the challenge of hoping for a better future. The beauty of Dorothy’s words, ‘You’re worth it. You can still choose yourself,’ is inspiring,” she said.

However, Peggy doesn’t realize that Dr. Kirkland’s feelings for her remain strong. Despite his mother’s disapproval, he decides to propose at the Newport Ball, asking Peggy’s father, Arthur (John Douglas Thompson), for her hand in front of their peers.

Benton expressed her excitement over the proposal scene, noting how significant it felt, saying, “I’ve been dreaming about this since 2019.” She commented on the emotional weight of the moment, highlighting the sense of reality rather than fantasy during the scenes of celebration.

According to Benton, the crew was also moved during the proposal, with hints of tears. It’s a beautiful moment that showcases the depth of Peggy’s character, culminating in what seems to be her happy ending.

Reflecting on earlier parts of the episode, Benton mentioned seeing Peggy at her lowest, making her eventual happiness feel even more precious. “I hope Season 4 of The Golden Age delivers the fairy tale wedding Peggy and Dr. Kirkland truly deserve,” she concluded.
