Minneapolis Mayor Omar Fate Prioritizes Illegal Immigrant Protection
Omar Fate, the newly elected democratic socialist mayor of Minneapolis, has made it clear that his primary focus in office will be to safeguard illegal immigrants from what he describes as a “hostile federal government” under President Trump.
In a recent interview with Minnesota’s Carre 11 News, Fate—who identifies as a democratic socialist—asserted that while he firmly supports these values, he doesn’t consider his policies to be “radical.” He was asked about the main priorities he would set if he were to take office on day one.
“My first priority is addressing the hostile federal government,” he explained, noting that the administration is bolstered by a Republican majority in both Congressional chambers and the Supreme Court. Many undocumented residents are understandably worried, he added.
Moving on, Fate highlighted public safety as his second key focus. However, he was quick to dismiss the idea of completely abolishing the police force. “That’s definitely not going to happen,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a public safety system that benefits everyone. He wants a police force that is both accountable and effective, ensuring that the right responses are dispatched when emergencies arise.
Interestingly, he pointed out that many 911 calls in Minneapolis don’t require an armed police response, suggesting instead that social workers and other professionals might be more appropriate in those situations.
Recently, Fate gained the endorsement of the Minnesota Democrats (DFL) as well as the American Democrats. His rise comes as current Mayor Jacob Frey, who is in his third term, indicates he will continue his campaign.
Fate, who is of Somali descent, has drawn comparisons to another democratic socialist from New York, Zohran Mamdani. Both candidates share immigrant backgrounds, with Mamdani hailing from Uganda.
Looking ahead, Fate has committed to increasing the city’s minimum wage, expanding affordable housing, and addressing police violence. In line with his progressive views, he proposes community-driven alternatives to some police responsibilities and aims to provide legal identification for undocumented residents.
