Dana Bash Criticizes January 6th Riot
CNN anchor Dana Bash sparked reactions on social media after stating on Monday that the January 6 Capitol Riot was the “most violent moment in recent history” for Washington, D.C. This comment came shortly after Trump announced his intention to send the National Guard to address rising crime rates in the capital.
During a panel discussion about Trump’s plans, Bash made the remark just before a commercial break. She said, “It’s important to remember that what happened on January 6th was an attack on the U.S. Capitol carried out by people who claimed to be acting in Donald Trump’s name. This event resulted in injuries among many, including law enforcement.” It’s pretty striking to think about, really.
Responses on social media were swift. Some criticized her assertion, questioning how the Capitol riots could be framed as more violent than other incidents in recent history. One commenter mentioned, “There were 274 murders in D.C. in 2023. The only death linked directly to January 6th was Officer Brian Sicknick, and that was due to a medical condition.”
Another user reminded everyone of the May 2020 riots, stating that the violence during those protests seemed to get overshadowed. A journalist expressed frustration, saying Bash only seemed strong in her condemnation of violence when it was related to the Capitol incident.
Curiously, there were just 14 murders in D.C. in the previous month. It’s hard not to find the criticism warranted, given that context. During a discussion on MSNBC, reporter Jonathan Allen echoed the sentiment, emphasizing January 6th as a major risk not just to physical security but to the country as a whole.
He noted that during the Capitol attack, Trump chose to maintain a forgiving stance toward many involved, some of whom were given positions back in government. It poses questions, doesn’t it? The portrayal of such violence and the subsequent reactions can really shape public perception in significant and sometimes conflicting ways.
