Rachel Morin’s murderer, an undocumented immigrant, receives a life sentence as the victim’s mother shares her heartbreak over her daughter’s loss.

Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the rape and murder of 37-year-old Rachel Morin in Maryland. This verdict came shortly after a jury found him guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree rape and murder, following less than an hour of deliberation.

Martinez Hernandez had entered the United States illegally in February 2023 and was already wanted in El Salvador for another murder. He lived in Maryland for several months before committing this gruesome act. Many in the community have linked his presence to former President Joe Biden’s controversial border policies.

When Morin was attacked while running on trails in Bel Air, DNA evidence connected Martinez Hernandez to both the murder and sexual assault. Harford County State Attorney Allison Healy emphasized the need for the harshest sentence possible, labeling him as beyond rehabilitation. Judge Yolanda L. Curtin echoed this sentiment, stating there was no hope for his reform and highlighting the impact of his actions on the community.

“You took a life that wasn’t yours. Your actions not only harmed a young woman but also instilled fear in the community,” the judge remarked, pointing out the once peaceful nature of the trails now marred by his crime.

Patty Morin, Rachel’s mother, expressed her struggles in articulating her loss, mentioning that she had written multiple drafts of her victim impact statement. She questioned how one could truly encapsulate a life lost in mere words, expressing uncertainty about whether she would even want an apology from her daughter’s killer.

Since the tragic event, she has been dealing with nightmares and anxiety stemming from her daughter’s murder. During the sentencing, several children of the victim spoke about their sorrow and loss.

“Every time I see a picture of her, I think about the life we had together. I miss her,” said one of her sons.

Harford County Sheriff Jeff Garler criticized the current immigration system, citing it as a “failure” that allowed Martinez Hernandez to enter and remain in the country, leading to his crimes.

“The immigration system failed us again, allowing this illegal entrant to stay and commit these heinous crimes,” Garler stated, speculating that Rachel might not have been his first victim.

Maryland judges can only impose sentences within their jurisdiction and lack the power to order deportation. President Trump reacted strongly to the case, attributing the tragedy to poor border security and emphasizing the need for stronger immigration enforcement.

“Rachel’s life was taken by a monster who shouldn’t have been here,” he remarked. He invited Patty Morin to speak at a White House event, offering condolences and support.

Moving forward, Martinez Hernandez will remain in the Maryland correctional system for life. Although he has an active ICE detainer, immediate deportation proceedings can only commence if he is released for any reason, which seems unlikely given his sentence.
