CNN Host Critiques Trump’s Crime Plan, Compares Him to Batman
On Monday night, CNN host Abby Phillip shared her thoughts on President Donald Trump’s crime-fighting efforts in Washington, D.C., likening him to Batman. This comparison sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some users finding Trump’s portrayal amusing.
During an introduction to “Newsnight,” Phillip chuckled at the idea of Trump as a “crime fighter” in the nation’s capital. This came after Trump announced plans to combat crime in the city that day. “Donald Trump has made himself Batman and the country’s capital is Gotham,” she remarked, also noting the president’s claim of taking control of policing in Washington.
Conservative commentator Steve Guest responded, suggesting that, while it might sound appealing, that wasn’t exactly Phillip’s intention.
Trump stated that he plans to federate the D.C. police department, placing it under the authority of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy in an effort to tackle crime. Interestingly, according to the District of Columbia Home Rules Act, the president can maintain federal control over city police stations for a period of up to 30 days.
Additionally, Trump mentioned he is mobilizing about 800 National Guard troops to restore “law, order and public safety” in the capital.
In the same CNN segment, Phillip reported that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser labeled Trump’s plan as “unsteady and unprecedented.” During a press conference, she stated, “This behavior today is uncertain and unprecedented, but given some of the rhetoric of the past, we are not entirely surprised. We can say that we will continue to run our government in a way that makes you proud.”
Reactions to the comparison of Trump to Batman were mixed among social media users. Some found it humorous, while others embraced the notion, with commenters expressing their support in various ways.
