The Teamsters Union has reportedly decided to contribute to Republican candidates, signaling a shift after years of predominantly supporting Democrats. This development highlights a medium-term strategy aimed at Battlefield Republicans.
It’s noteworthy that Teamster President Sean M. O’Brien delivered a significant speech at the Republican National Convention in 2024, where he was invited by President Donald Trump.
O’Brien remarked, “President Trump had the courage to welcome us to this Republican Congress, which is a remarkable move. Other contenders would have hesitated to invite Teamsters into the fold.”
An article from Politics, released on a recent Monday, stated that O’Brien “indicates a more lasting transformation” with regard to donations directed at the Republican Party.
For the second consecutive year, the union’s political arm has contributed to the Republican House Campaign Division, following nearly two decades of backing primarily Democrats. The Trade Union Promotion Political Action Committee – which engages with Democrats, Republicans, and Independent voters – gave $5,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee during the second quarter.
Along with the NRCC donation, Teamsters have also contributed a total of $62,000 to nearly twenty GOP Congressional candidates in crucial battleground areas.
A spokesperson for the Teamsters mentioned that their members are “workers whose concerns span all political lines, and staying in a bubble isn’t beneficial. They prefer to engage broadly rather than focusing on selective conversations.”
Despite this shift in donations, the report from Politics notes that the group still allocates more funds to Democrats.
In February 2024, NBC News reported that the Teamsters’ Political Action Committee broke with longstanding tradition by approving a $45,000 donation to the Republican National Committee’s treaty fund last month.
Additionally, a Teamster official mentioned a reluctance to support the 2024 presidential candidate, despite indications that former Vice President Kamala Harris (D) had some backing for Trump’s position, as reported by Breitbart News.
