Michigan Man Sentenced for Killing Best Friend

A man from Michigan is facing a lengthy prison sentence after authorities reported that he ran over and killed his best friend just hours after attending a wedding celebration. This information arose during court proceedings.

James Schiller, 24, received a sentence of 30 to 45 years in prison on Monday in the Genesee County Circuit Court after he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the case of Terry Taylor Jr.’s death.

The incident took place on August 30, 2024, in Flint, which is about an hour northwest of Detroit. This occurred after the wedding of Sheila and her partner, Savanah Collier, earlier that day. The post-wedding festivities proceeded to a residence on East Hamilton Street, where an altercation erupted, according to officials.

Prosecutors asserted that Schiller intentionally struck Taylor with his vehicle following an argument. Testimony indicated that after the impact, Schiller drove a short distance away but then returned to punch the victim.

Witnesses described the violent nature of the incident, noting that Taylor was thrown into the air by the force of the impact. A cousin of Taylor recounted arriving on the scene to find first responders performing CPR, with blood visible around the victim.

Schiller’s attorney contended that the incident was unintentional and fueled by alcohol. During the sentencing hearing, Schiller expressed deep remorse, stating, “I will forever regret it.”

Judge Callie Hanible, while delivering the sentence, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, saying, “Mr. Schiller, I believe you are not a criminal, but you’re a murderer.”

Taylor, 29, left behind four children and a fiancée. Schiller, who had no prior criminal record, faced additional convictions related to the incident, including driving without a license and leaving the scene of a crime.

He will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 30 years. Additionally, Schiller’s wife, Collier, has raised questions about potential accessories to the crime, with a verdict anticipated later this month.
