Vikings Introduce Male Cheerleaders, Stirring Mixed Reactions
The Minnesota Vikings have made an interesting move by adding two male members to their cheerleading squad, a decision that hasn’t been met with universal approval among fans.
According to Queerty, a site focused on LGBTQ+ issues, some fans reacted strongly, with the website labeling the backlash as “homophobic.” The two new cheerleaders are identified as Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn.
One fan expressed frustration, stating, “I hope I’ve never seen this before. It’s really heartbreaking. I can’t relate to this mess.”
While some dissenting voices emerged, there were also fans who voiced their support on social media. One user remarked, “We won’t support you anymore after finding out we have male cheerleaders, despite loving the Minnesota Vikings.” Another person echoed this sentiment, responding with similar disappointment.
“I was a four-seat season ticket holder right behind the 35-yard line, and now I just can’t attend another game,” one individual shared, citing their discontent over the inclusion of male cheerleaders.
While a faction opposes the decision, not everyone is against it. Some fans indicated support for male cheerleaders but felt it would be better if they weren’t presented in a “girly” manner. “I have no problem with this. The athletic ability of men is impressive,” one user stated, adding that the cheerleaders shouldn’t feel pressured to adopt stereotypically feminine looks.
Another critic mentioned, “If you’re going to have male cheerleaders, that’s fine, but don’t present them in a way that feels too feminine.”
The Vikings are set to kick off their regular season against the Chicago Bears on September 8th. Notably, this season, 11 out of 32 NFL teams will include male cheerleaders in their squads.
