Minnesota Republicans Call for Action After Controversial Exchange

The Minnesota Republican Party is urging accountability from Democratic leaders following an incident where state Rep. Aisha Gomez allegedly instructed Republicans to harm themselves.

A video circulating on social media shows a heated confrontation between Gomez and Republican state Rep. Elliot Engen during a protest at the state legislature. This altercation unfolded after Democrats expressed their frustration over the failure of certain gun control measures.

Engen has claimed that Gomez shouted phrases like “go shoot” at him, which he later reiterated on social media. He also mentioned that other Democratic colleagues echoed similar remarks.

Following the exchange, Republican leaders have demanded that Gomez lose her committee assignments, stating that such behavior is intolerable and compromises the safety of others. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth expressed that anyone promoting hate isn’t suitable to lead the state.

Calls for Gomez’s resignation have also emerged, which could potentially change the balance of power in the House, where there are currently 67 members evenly split between parties.

In her defense, Gomez countered the claims in a statement to KSTP-TV, asserting that she did not use violent language. Instead, she presented a video where she appears to be urging Engen to consider others rather than himself.

She described the accusations as a “complete fabrication” of her words and expressed that she was responding to Engen’s earlier comments, which she believed unfairly blamed parents of children lost to gun violence.

Engen, in turn, accused KSTP of bias towards Democrats and reacted assertively when pressed by a reporter to clarify his statements on video.

There has been no immediate response from Engen’s office regarding the situation.

This confrontation occurs amid rising concerns about political violence, especially following recent assassination attempts involving prominent political figures.

Gomez reiterated that she never implies violence and emphasized the importance of context in her remarks, urging that her comments were a reaction to Engen’s accusations against grieving parents.
