Suspect in home invasion fatally shoots mother of country music singer in Virginia

A sheriff in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley described the fatal home invasion that resulted in the death of a country music singer’s mother as unlike anything he’s encountered in his long career.

On August 3, around midnight, 62-year-old Holly Hatcher, a former teacher, was killed at her home in Rockingham County. In the same incident, her husband, 65-year-old Michael Hatcher, shot and killed the intruder, identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker.

The couple’s son, 31-year-old Spencer Hatcher—a rising star in country music—announced that he would be canceling several planned performances following his mother’s death.

Officials mentioned that Walker had no notable criminal background, but it’s worth noting that he was involved in a car mishap two days prior to the break-in. Rockingham County Sheriff Brian Hutchison mentioned in a Facebook video that this break-in was particularly unique and alarming.

The sheriff emphasized that the incident appeared random and very unusual, especially since Walker arrived armed with a large knife. Investigators revealed that Walker had rented a campsite in Endless Cave shortly before the break-in and was seen on surveillance footage making purchases at a local Walmart, where he acquired a knife and a sleeping bag.

According to Sheriff Hutchison, Walker was shot in the driveway after Michael Hatcher retrieved a loaded pistol from their car and fired. In a heartfelt video from the Sheriff’s Office, Michael expressed gratitude for the community’s support during this painful time.

The Rockingham County Public Schools, where Holly Hatcher taught for 19 years, released a statement describing her as a cherished colleague.

Country music executive Benny Brown compared Spencer Hatcher’s potential to that of a young George Strait, highlighting his talent and artistry.

Spencer shared on his Instagram about canceling his scheduled performances, including shows at the Rockingham County Fair in Ohio and Harrisonburg, Virginia.

In a personal note, he expressed his hope to eventually reschedule those dates, thanking everyone for their support during this difficult time.
