Zohran Mamdani keeps discussing Andrew Cuomo's rent-controlled apartment while on his anti-Trump tour in NYC.

Mamdani’s Anti-Trump Tour Sparks Feud with Cuomo

Zohran Mamdani’s much-talked-about tour against President Trump has taken a more personal turn.

While he could have taken the opportunity to critique his mayoral opponent Andrew Cuomo, he instead continued his “Five Boroughs Against Trump” campaign, focusing on broader issues. In a twist, he sought to link Trump with Cuomo, suggesting that both New Yorkers share certain traits.

“It’s interesting—Andrew Cuomo has spent more time discussing my apartment than addressing why so many New Yorkers are being forced out of theirs,” Mamdani remarked during his “Brooklyn Against Trump” event.

He added that Cuomo seemed more focused on disparaging him rather than the laws enacted by Trump.

Cuomo launched fresh attacks on Mamdani, whom he referred to as a part of “#RentGate,” questioning the legitimacy of Mamdani’s lease for his Astoria apartment, which is co-signed, he claims, by his notable filmmaker parents.

The ongoing rivalry is heating up as Cuomo prepares to run as an independent following a significant defeat to Mamdani in the Democratic primary.

Andrew Kirtzman, managing director at a consulting firm, suggests that Cuomo is banking on these rent-related assaults to gain traction.

“Cuomo might think these targeting tactics are effective,” Kirtzman assessed. “But I’m not convinced that many New Yorkers will feel as outraged as he hopes.”

Cuomo has also proposed “Zoran’s law,” targeting wealthier New Yorkers believed to benefit from rent stabilization, which seems to aggravate progressive sentiments.

During Mamdani’s event, several left-leaning lawmakers slammed Trump for proposing cuts to housing support for New Yorkers.

Mamdani, who occupies a rent-stabilized apartment that costs $2,300 monthly, responded to Cuomo’s proposed legislation, criticizing it for suggesting that New Yorkers allocate 30% of their income just to secure rent-stabilized housing.

“This approach reflects much of Cuomo’s political stance, where it feels like he works backwards from the evidence and doesn’t mind who gets hurt along the way,” Mamdani stated.

His spokesperson, Dora Pekac, wouldn’t comment on the lease issue but did not hesitate to draw parallels between Cuomo and Trump.

“Andrew Cuomo has solicited political counsel from the president and seems to be in sync with him on several alarming issues,” she added.

“Simply put, Cuomo is in collusion with Trump in ways that endanger the New Yorkers he’s supposed to represent, and we must never let our city overlook this.”
