Zohran Mamdani is asking for trouble by confronting Trump

Zohran Mamdani’s tour titled “Five Boroughs Against Trump” seems more centered on his interests than those of the city.

What New Yorkers really don’t need is a mayor eager to pick a fight with the White House; that kind of conflict typically ends up doing little more than providing fodder for political battles.

This focus on opposing President Trump distracts from crucial local issues. I mean, shouldn’t voters be thinking about the state of public schools, local economies, or how we can improve safety in our streets and subways?

Mamdani appears to be more concerned with his privileges and his lack of experience. There’s this ongoing tension with law enforcement and a general fixation that seems misguided. Much of his so-called positive agenda feels, well, impractical.

Honestly, it caters to the vanity of a certain group of Democratic socialists and their supporters. There’s this fantasy that if he wins the Democratic primary, we’re on the verge of a new socialist age in America.

But you can’t really push back against Trump in any meaningful way—besides, of course, Mayor Eric Adams trying to halt existing grants.

In reality, there’s no simple definition of what a mayor’s role should be in this scenario.

The US Constitution doesn’t grant mayors the power to challenge the President, Congress, or the Supreme Court.

In practical terms, declaring a war on Trump, as Mamdani seems to suggest, might lead to self-destructive chaos rather than any real change.

New York City really has little leverage over the federal government—maybe Wall Street dollars, but it’s tough to push a socialist agenda through that route. Honestly, I’m worn out from attempts to stop Trump.

On the flip side, the federal government can make life challenging for New York in plenty of ways.

As some congressional members have pointed out, local governments can’t just withhold taxes from New Yorkers. It’s not that simple.

State Attorney General Tish James, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and several judges have already enacted tough laws against Trump. Yet, during his time, Mayor de Blasio did what he could to maintain dealings with Trump’s businesses in the city.

A movement like “Trump Resistance”—fueled by progressive critiques—poses its own set of challenges, often undermined by federal authority over state and local laws.

While playing the tough guy might generate some buzz for Mamdani on social media, the reality is that it’s the people of NYC who will bear the consequences of these confrontational moves.
