Pete Alonso sets a new Mets franchise record with his 253rd career home run

Pete Alonso Becomes Mets Home Run Leader

Pete Alonso has officially become the home run leader for the New York Mets. In a recent game against the Atlanta Braves, he hit a two-run homer off pitcher Spencer Strider, marking his 253rd career home run, all with the Mets. This achievement put him ahead of Daryl Strawberry, who was previously the franchise’s home run leader.

While Strawberry racked up 335 homers during his career, it’s worth noting that he played for multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. Fans had anticipated that David Wright, the team’s former captain from 2004 to 2018, would eventually hold this record. However, Wright hit 242 home runs before his numbers were retired this season, placing him third in the franchise history behind Alonso and Strawberry.

At times over the last offseason, it seemed uncertain whether Alonso would achieve this milestone, but he signed a two-year, $54 million contract, which appears to have worked out well for both him and the Mets. As of now, Alonso is batting .264 with 26 home runs and 93 RBIs in 118 games this season.

Alonso joined the major leagues in 2019, quickly becoming a favorite among fans. He even set a single-season MLB record with 53 home runs, surpassing the previous record of 52 set by Yankees’ Aaron Judge in 2017. Fans are eagerly hoping for more home runs from Alonso as the Mets aim for success this season.

Alonso is also pursuing records in RBIs, currently sitting with 681, while Wright leads with 970. As the Mets vie for a wild card spot in the National League with a 63-55 record, Alonso’s contributions will be crucial as they look to solidify their position.
