Tragic Accident Claims Life of Mother of Ex-WNBA Player
Authorities in Illinois report that the mother of former WNBA player Sophie Bruner lost her life in a head-on crash involving an undocumented immigrant with a prior record of DUI offenses.
Darcy Connolly Brunner, age 61, was struck when 30-year-old Roland Ico Chock, a Guatemalan national, veered into oncoming traffic in Freeport on Saturday afternoon, according to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office.
It has been indicated that others involved in the accident were also undocumented immigrants with prior DUI arrests.
Investigators are looking into whether Ico Chock was under the influence during the collision.
Preliminary findings suggest there were no indications that Brunner had been drinking.
In light of this tragedy, Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) remarked that Ico Chock’s illegal status in the United States is well-known to homeland security officials.
“A woman who devoted her life to her family and community was killed in broad daylight by someone who has no right to be on our roads,” Chesney stated.
“His criminal record includes multiple DUI charges, felony DUI, and battery. Moreover, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has confirmed his illegal status, stating he entered the country a few years ago during the Biden administration.”
The senator criticized Illinois’ immigration laws, notably the Trust Act, which limits local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal authorities concerning criminal immigrants.
“This individual has been shielded by a system that prioritizes the protection of illegal immigrants over the safety of Illinois residents,” Chesney stated. “I refuse to remain silent while dangerous, repeat offenders roam free, putting lives at risk.”
