Tragic Case of Nurse’s Murder in Illinois

A dedicated nurse and mother was reportedly sexually assaulted and strangled over several hours in her Schaumburg, Illinois home by her former boyfriend. This incident followed a troubling history of domestic violence, as revealed by authorities.

On April 30, police responded to a call concerning Katherine “Kat” Torbic, 43, after a family member reported not hearing from her that day. Concerned for her wellbeing, officers arrived at her home.

Previous domestic violence incidents involving Torbic and her longtime partner, Kevin Motyky, were known to police. Upon entering the residence, they discovered Torbic’s lifeless body.

Motyky, 56, was found in the garage and arrested due to a warrant from earlier domestic battery allegations involving Torbic. He now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.

Having dated for a decade, the couple had separated earlier this year, and Torbic had recently begun seeing someone new.

Authorities uncovered a digital recording device belonging to Motyky that held over seven hours of audio. The recordings captured Torbic being sexually assaulted, restrained, and ultimately strangled, as stated by reports.

In court documents, prosecutors indicated the recordings featured heated arguments, with Torbic pleading for Motyky to let her go. Reports suggest he continued to torment her, making accusations related to infidelity.

The disturbing audio depicted moments of physical abuse, with Motyky reportedly striking Torbic and binding her with duct tape. Prosecutors noted that he threatened to kill her, maintaining a hold on her throughout the ordeal.

The recordings concluded with the final moments of Torbic’s life, which involved her being strangled. Disturbingly, Motyky tweeted during the incident, making unsettling comments that hinted at his state of mind.

When arrested, Motyky appeared intoxicated and admitted to taking various substances, according to reports.

Torbic had over 20 years of experience as a gastroenterology nurse at a local hospital, also working as a registered nurse at a medical spa. Fox River MedSpa expressed deep sorrow over her loss, emphasizing her dedication to both her clients and colleagues.

The spa described her as a loving mother and a cherished member of their team, highlighting her impactful presence in the workplace.

Motyky had a troubling history of domestic violence allegations, reportedly even choking Torbic earlier this year and subjecting her to further threats of violence before she managed to escape to a neighbor’s house.

Currently, Motyky is being held without bail and is set to appear in court May 29.
