Democratic states are being examined for gerrymandering during the Texas debate.

Some Democratic states are under scrutiny regarding their congressional district maps, especially following setbacks in Texas. Interestingly, many areas voted significantly for former President Donald Trump in 2024, yet few Republican representatives were elected. For instance, in New Mexico, Trump garnered nearly 46% of the vote, yet all three congressional seats are controlled by Democrats. The New Mexico Supreme Court upheld the current districting despite claims of gerrymandering, with the Cook Partisan Voting Index labeling the second congressional district as highly competitive.

Democratic strategists argue that their party lacks the “moral authority” to push for redistricting in Texas. Connecticut saw almost 42% of the vote go for Trump, yet Republicans secured no seats in 2024. Illinois, notorious for its gerrymandering practices, has only three of the 17 seats held by Republicans. Around this, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker supported Texas Democrats and faced inquiries regarding the current mapping during a late-night talk show. Colbert pointed out the unconventional shapes of certain districts, questioning if this is a common occurrence in other states.

Pritzker responded, indicating such practices are rare and often disenfranchising minority voters by erasing districts aligned with the Voting Rights Act, hinting that this could lead to legal challenges.

In California, Trump managed to win 38% of the vote, gaining nine out of 52 seats, which reflects a considerable Democratic advantage. There are discussions about potentially adding five more Democratic seats, with a special election for voter approval upcoming in November. California Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned emergency actions regarding the Texas situation and indicated intentions to counteract the political landscape there.

New York displays a similar trend with a 13% Democratic lead in congressional seats, while Trump has around 43% of the state’s vote. In Oregon, Democrats hold a 24% lead but Trump has 41% of the votes. New Jersey presents a contrasting scenario, where Trump received 46% of the vote but only three of 12 seats are Republican. Meanwhile, Maryland has just one Republican representative, even though 34% of voters backed Trump.

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has threatened to revoke eight GOP seats if Democratic lawmakers do not return to Texas. Abbott stated there are legal implications tied to the absence of lawmakers as it violates their constitutional duties and oaths of office.

Republican territories have faced numerous gerrymandering lawsuits in recent years, yet Democratic strategist Julian Epstein highlighted on “Fox News Live” that the Democrats are not free of criticism regarding redistricting. Epstein remarked on the lack of “moral authority” for Democrats, drawing attention to states like Massachusetts and New Jersey, where Republicans have been adversely affected by gerrymandering.

At this moment, many Texas House Democrats remain out of state to prevent a quorum needed for passing redistricting legislation, and Abbott has indicated that these members may face arrest upon their return.
