California Republican met with loud boos at town hall

California Republican drowned out by boos at town hall

Rep. Doug Ramalfa Faces Backlash at Town Hall Event

On Monday, Rep. Doug Ramalfa from California became another Republican to encounter fierce reactions during a Town Hall event, as frustrations around the Trump administration’s immigration policies and the GOP agenda surfaced among attendees.

At an event in Chico, California, Ramalfa’s opening statements were met with shouts and boos from the crowd. As staff distributed colored placards to the audience packed into the local Elks lodge, lawmakers were met with a stark visual divide.

“There is no fascism in America!” shouted one person at Ramalfa. Another attendee responded, “We need to fire each [one of you].”

A woman expressed her concerns after the meeting, remarking, “I have a lot of worries, but a major issue here is the cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and housing vouchers. There’s this myth that we don’t work hard, and that’s why we’re trying to get free handouts. We’re doing everything we can to support our neighbors.”

Later on Tuesday, Ramalfa faced another, albeit smaller, group of displeased constituents at City Hall in Red Bluff, California, where he attempted to justify Trump’s policies, including the controversial Medicaid cuts. He referred to them as part of a “big, beautiful bill.”

“We’re not cutting a dime from eligible people,” he insisted, arguing that the current administration should ensure Medi-Cal is not exploited by those who have immigrated illegally.

Local news station KRCR reported on an incident where a man, positioned at the back of the auditorium, gestured as he attempted to interject during Ramalfa’s speech. One attendee even mocked Trump’s campaign slogan with a shirt featuring a caricature of the president in a cage, accompanied by the words, “Make America great again again.”

Yet, Ramalfa did receive some support. A woman identifying herself as a Hispanic immigrant noted, “Thank you for continuing to protect our rights. I would advise those who are yelling to get a passport and take a trip. The grass isn’t greener on the other side. America is still the best country in the world.”

Representing a significant stretch of Northern California, Ramalfa is among five Republicans in the state facing potential ousting due to a Democratic effort to redraw district lines ahead of the upcoming elections. This move could mitigate Republican advantages expected in Texas next year.

During the Chico Town Hall, California Republicans voiced their opposition to proposed district changes in Texas, suggesting that initiatives like this one in their home state were counterproductive. “Texas shouldn’t be doing this. It could ignite a wildfire across the country. Every state will try to change things for political gain,” he cautioned. “What differentiates California’s situation from Texas is that they are trying to silence the voices linked to these propositions.”
