Man Charged with Harassment After CEO’s Murder
A man from Saratoga County is facing a federal charge related to alleged harassment of the family of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, following Thompson’s tragic shooting in midtown Manhattan late last year.
Shane Daly, 40, of Galway, New York, was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with cyberstalking. Federal prosecutors claim he sent threatening messages to Thompson’s family shortly after the shooting.
Between December 4th and 7th, 2024, just hours after Thompson’s murder, Daly reportedly made repeated calls to the phone line used by his family. In multiple voicemail messages, he used menacing language about Thompson’s death, expressing a disturbing satisfaction with the incident, and stating that both the victims and Thompson’s children “deserve to meet the same violent end.”
A representative for John A. Salcone remarked, “Daly seemingly welcomed this tragedy and did everything he could to intensify the pain for the Thompson family.” Similarly, U.S. attorney Jay Clayton described Daly’s actions as a threat, harassing a family in mourning just after losing their loved one.
If convicted, Daly could face up to five years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and three years of supervised release. He is expected to appear in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany.
Thompson had been leading UnitedHealthcare since 2021 and was fatally shot in early December 2024. Authorities have identified Luigi Mangion as the main suspect in the murder; he has pleaded not guilty. Notably, Daly has not been linked to the actual murder but is accused of harassing the family afterward.
The FBI is currently investigating the case, with involvement from various U.S. attorneys. As of now, there has been no immediate response to inquiries from law enforcement regarding additional comments.
