Chuck Schumer Expresses He Feels Completely Secure While Walking in DC

Schumer Challenges GOP’s View on D.C. Safety

On Wednesday, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer pushed back against Republicans who have labeled Washington, D.C. as too dangerous to navigate. He asserted that the city is “completely safe,” despite ongoing worries among residents about the levels of violent crime and murder rates.

This comes after President Donald Trump proclaimed a state of criminal emergency in the district on Monday, calling for the National Guard to assist in battling violent crime. In a discussion with Aaron Parna, Schumer mentioned his usual early morning walks around the Capitol and nearby monuments, dismissing the claims made by GOP lawmakers that the city’s circumstances warrant a federal takeover of the local police precinct and the mobilization of the National Guard.

“I always walk around when I wake up early, just as the sun is rising. I stroll around the Capitol and other monuments, and I feel completely safe. They’re just exaggerating,” Schumer stated, accusing Trump of attempting to divert attention. “That’s his strategy. It was evident during his first term, and now he’s at it again.”

Schumer also discussed how the Senate utilized less common rules from the Homeland Security Committee, allowing five members to request records concerning Epstein, prompting what he termed a “defensive response” from House Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republicans.

“We held our ground effectively on the Epstein matter. Johnson had to send his team home early, which we dubbed Epstein’s break. There’s this obscure rule where if five of us on the Homeland Security Committee ask for documents, we are entitled to them,” Schumer remarked. “When we brought Trump’s lawyers to interview Ghislaine, they were clearly caught off guard. They realize it, and we aren’t backing down.”

In a contrasting narrative, major media outlets reinforced claims from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) stating that violent crime in Washington had decreased by 35% since 2024, although federal data seems to tell a different story. White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt noted that 850 officers and agents had made 23 arrests during the initial night of Trump’s law and order initiative.

FBI statistics indicate that violent crime has only diminished by about 10% since 2024, hovering slightly above the levels seen in 2018. Unlike FBI reports, the MPD figures do not account for serious offenses like aggravated assaults, focusing instead on homicides, sexual assaults, assaults with dangerous weapons, and robberies. In May, an investigation paused the police chief’s role amid concerns about potential data forgery. By July, the DC Police Union had publicly accused the MPD of inflating claims of crime reductions.

A tragic incident in June involved the gang-related shooting death of 21-year-old Congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Yachim near a Metro stop. Additionally, in May, two Israeli officials lost their lives in a shootout outside the Jewish Museum in the capital, leading to prosecutor charges against 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez for multiple counts, including first-degree murder and federal hate crimes.
