Trump’s Crime Crackdown in Washington, D.C.
Attorney General Pam Bondy stated that President Trump’s directive to address crime in the capital is “crystal clear” in an exclusive interview with Rachel Campos Duffy. She emphasized the urgent nature of the situation, saying, “We don’t need to talk about the violent crimes we see every day. Staff are being shot. Drive-bys are happening in the capital. No more stops.”
On Monday, Trump effectively brought the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal oversight, granting federal agencies greater authority than the local police. That same day, a tragic incident occurred, resulting in the 100th murder in D.C. for the year.
Bondy asserted that Trump’s decision aims to provide support to all residents of the District, including the Latino community, which makes up over 10% of the city’s population. “President Trump wants to ensure Washington, D.C., is safe for everyone,” she remarked.
Beyond safety, Bondy mentioned that Trump’s vision includes making the capital “clean” and “beautiful again,” expressing her desire for visitors, including her own family, to enjoy the city’s attractions without reservations.
Some critics suggested that D.C. crime rates are the lowest they’ve been in 30 years, though a police commander was suspended earlier this year due to alleged discrepancies in crime reporting.
In response to the controversial statistics, Bondy noted, “It’s essential for people to feel safe, and we can’t ignore the reality of crime.” She highlighted that federal agencies have been on alert in recent nights.
Former Fox News host Janine Piro also defended the crackdown on crime, responding to media inquiries about crime rates by likening the struggles of local youth to serious physical injuries. “There are always distractions, and that’s why I’m here to fight,” she stated.
Piro’s comments come as Trump’s administration faces scrutiny over its portrayal of crime in the city. Critics, including outlets like Politico, have suggested that the administration’s approach may be aimed at framing D.C. as a dangerous place.
