Individual who escaped the country after reportedly faking his death found guilty of rape in Utah

The individual accused of faking his death to escape sexual assault charges was found guilty of first-degree felony rape on Wednesday. This verdict stems from a 2008 case following three days of testimony from the victim and her family.

Nicholas Rossi, who did not testify, is set to be sentenced on October 20, facing a minimum of five years in prison as per Utah law. Additionally, he has another rape trial scheduled in Utah County for next month.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill expressed gratitude towards the survivors for their bravery in pursuing justice, noting the long delay since the original attack. He acknowledged the victim’s patience in the efforts to bring Rossi back to Utah for the trial.

Authorities identified Rossi in 2018 through a DNA sample from a rape kit, part of a broader initiative in Utah to address a backlog of such cases.

Interestingly, the man, who was transferred from Scotland, continues to deny his identity in relation to the charges. Originally from Rhode Island, Rossi claimed to have a serious illness before allegedly fleeing the country. An obituary he created stated he died in February 2020; however, this was met with skepticism from locals.

He was apprehended in 2021 when hospital staff recognized his tattoos from an Interpol notice. Despite his claims of being an orphan named Arthur Knight and his various aliases, he was extradited to Utah in January 2024.

The victim, who met Rossi during her recovery from a brain injury, described their rapid engagement soon after their first meeting. She testified about how Rossi’s charm initially drew her in, but complications arose when she found herself financially entangled with him.

She later recounted being raped by Rossi in his apartment after driving him home. At the time, she didn’t report it due to her parents’ reactions and the confusion surrounding the situation, particularly expressing that her father had concerns about how to address it.

Years later, the victim felt compelled to come forward after learning about other accusations against Rossi. She is now awaiting more developments regarding the ongoing legal proceedings related to another alleged rape from 2008.
