Chuck Girard Passes Away at 81

Chuck Girard, a key figure in the Christian music scene and founding member of the band Love Song, died on Monday at the age of 81 after battling IV cancer. His wife, Karen Girard, shared a heartfelt statement announcing his passing, which noted his transition to heaven brought both sadness and joy. She mentioned how he left this world in peace, surrounded by family.

Birthed in Los Angeles on August 27, 1943, Girard found early success as a teenager with the vocal group The Castells, achieving top 20 hits with “So Sacred” and “This Is Love.” He collaborated with prominent artists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison, and even recorded the song “I Do” under the production of Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys.

In 1970, Girard embraced Christianity and co-founded Love Song, transitioning from secular music to contemporary Christian music (CCM). His early adult years were marked by a fascination with the counterculture of the late 1960s; he dabbled in LSD, explored eastern religions, and lived the ‘hippie’ lifestyle. Eventually, he found his spiritual path at Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa.

According to Love Song’s website, “In his early 20s, Girard was disillusioned by fame and searching for deeper meaning. His spiritual search culminated in his encounter with Christianity, which changed the course of his life.” They added how his role in the band helped define what modern Christian music has become.

Love Song released its debut album in 1972, and the group was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012. Girard’s final digital album, titled Moonrise Serenade, was recently released, and he was also working on a documentary about the band’s impact called A Band Called Lovesong: The Music & Movement of the Jesus Revolution, slated for release in September.

Pastor Greg Laurie, who became a Christian during the Jesus movement of the 1960s, spoke highly of Girard, emphasizing his influence on Christian music and his dedication to sharing faith through his artistic endeavors. Girard’s legacy will continue inspiring future generations, a sentiment expressed by many who’ve had the privilege to know him.

In an emotional tribute, Girard’s daughter Zoey also honored his memory, sharing pictures and announcing his passing on social media. Several prominent Christian artists, including Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith, have come forward to pay their respects, highlighting the impact Girard had on their lives and the broader music community.

He is survived by his wife, Karen, his four daughters—Christine, Alisa, Shelley, and Nikki—and five grandchildren, along with a great-grandson. Notably, he also had a grandson, Matt, who passed away in 2019.
