Michael Phelps expresses serious concerns about USA swimming

Renowned American swimmer Michael Phelps has recently voiced his concerns regarding the declining state of U.S. swimming. In a detailed five-page statement shared on Instagram, he has reiterated the urgent need for action within the organization.

Phelps expressed his empathy for teammates who struggle to compete in a sport they are passionate about, pointing out that many lack essential support. “I’ve seen too many teammates struggle to compete in the sport they love without the support they need,” he stated. He acknowledged the difficulties sports organizations face in regaining membership levels from before the pandemic, emphasizing that simply producing medals doesn’t reflect a functioning system.

For Phelps, swimming transcends winning medals; it’s about creating an environment that fosters growth in and out of the pool. He reflects on his own family and admits uncertainty about whether his sons will want to participate competitively in swimming.

Interestingly, he didn’t start his post with harsh criticisms. Instead, he highlighted a need for improved leadership within the organization, pointing out that Team USA secured only 44% of medals at the recent Paris Games—the lowest percentage for the U.S. since 1988.

While he acknowledged financial issues as a contributing factor to the decline, he attributed it mainly to “poor operational management and weak leadership.” Yet, Phelps didn’t just criticize; he offered to be a resource for American swimming, stating, “My door is open and I have work to do.”

He also suggested that USA Swimming undergo an independent review. Phelps believes adopting an athlete-first mentality is crucial for supporting top swimmers while also nurturing younger talent to elevate their skills.

In an earlier post about his teammate Ryan Lochte, Phelps responded to Lochte’s symbolic image of a funeral for U.S. swimming. He posed the question of whether the upcoming 2025 World Championships would serve as a “wake-up call” for the organization.

At the World Championships, Team USA performed impressively, collecting nine gold medals and leading all participating countries with a total of 29 medals.

Phelps, an iconic figure in the Olympic world, holds an astounding 23 gold medals, which remain an Olympic record, solidifying his place as one of the greatest athletes in history.
