Schumer Claims Safety in D.C., Critiques Republican Concerns
On Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed that he feels “completely safe” in Washington, D.C., dismissing Republican claims of danger in the city as “full of it.” His comments came during a discussion on a podcast with Attorney Aaron Parnas, who had raised the topic of safety concerns among some of Schumer’s Republican colleagues.
Parnas mentioned that many Republicans convey fears about their safety while in D.C. Schumer, however, countered that he enjoys early morning walks around the capital and its monuments without any worries. “I feel completely safe,” he stated.
This discussion followed President Donald Trump’s recent announcement about taking control of the D.C. metropolitan police and deploying 800 National Guard members in the city.
Schumer continued to criticize the Republicans. “They’re just trying to create distractions,” he asserted, suggesting that Trump’s motives were more about diverting attention from larger issues, which has been a recurring tactic throughout his presidency.
Adding to the conversation, Schumer highlighted that while crime rates in D.C. have become a focal point, many Democrats are pointing out that crimes in the area are at their lowest in three decades. Since August 7, D.C. law enforcement has arrested over 100 individuals, including 43 on a single day, yet the narrative of rampant crime seems to persist.
Schumer also referenced ongoing efforts among Senate Democrats to release detailed documents regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, stating that the party’s focus would remain on these pressing issues rather than on what he described as mere distractions concerning crime.
A special assistant to a prominent Republican expressed skepticism about Schumer’s reassurances, pointing out that he benefits from taxpayer-funded security while broader concerns about crime in the U.S. remain—particularly in Democrat-led cities. This perspective reflects a deeper divide on how to handle public safety at both political and community levels.
