Trump Vows Accountability for DC Police Over ‘Fake Crime Statistics’

Trump Promises Action on D.C. Crime Statistics

On Thursday, President Donald Trump stated that the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will be held accountable for providing inaccurate crime statistics in Washington, D.C.

During a discussion in the Oval Office about whether the administration would share its own crime figures to counter the alleged fake data from the MPD, Trump replied, “Yes.” Since 2024, there has reportedly been a 26% reduction in certain crime statistics. However, the MPD suspended several police commanders in May and initiated an investigation into possible manipulation of violent crime data throughout the district.

“They are currently investigating. They’re supplying fake crime statistics, just like we’ve seen in the financial sector,” Trump remarked. He expressed optimism about the city’s future, claiming, “Washington, D.C. is at its worst point now but will soon be at its best. You’ll see a city with no crime. I firmly believe that.” His emphasis on the strength of certain individuals in law enforcement was notable as he repeated the phrase, “these are strong men.”

Recent reports indicate that the decline in violent crime may not be as significant as suggested. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) noted that violent crimes, including assaults, have only decreased by 10% since 2024, remaining at levels higher than those in 2018.

Washington’s murder rates have consistently exceeded pre-pandemic figures since 2020, with an exception in 2021, when incomplete data was submitted. According to FBI analysis, assaults with or without weapons were reported to be 12% worse, with a 37% increase in incidents compared to 2023.

Furthermore, Washington had the fourth-highest homicide rate in the United States in 2024, surpassing both New York City and Chicago.

In response to the rising crime rates, Trump has involved the National Guard, resulting in 111 arrests since a crackdown began on Monday. Among those arrested are 29 individuals identified as illegal immigrants, facing charges related to murder, firearm offenses, drug possession, and indecent conduct.

The issue of violent crime in Washington captured national attention in 2025, especially following the tragic death of 21-year-old intern Eric Tarpinian Yachim and a severe attack on staff identified as “big ball.”
