Trump Advocates Policy Shift for Metropolitan Police
President Donald Trump has expressed his support for a new directive that allows metropolitan police departments to share information with federal immigration authorities regarding individuals apprehended during traffic stops. He believes this initiative is a positive move, suggesting that similar policies could be adopted by other cities as well.
Approved on Thursday by Police Chief Pamela Smith, this order aligns with Trump’s broader strategy, including efforts to federate the capital’s police force and deploy 800 National Guard troops to combat crime in Washington.
“What you’re saying is that it was a very positive thing,” Trump stated during a press briefing. “When they stop people and identify them as illegal, they report them, and that’s very positive.”
Trump further emphasized the significance of the order, saying, “If they’re doing that, it’s great. I think it’s going to happen across the country. I want to stop crime. I don’t believe it can happen if Democrats remain strong on this issue.” This directive enables metropolitan police to coordinate their activities with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem also praised the initiative, asserting that it would allow law enforcement to rapidly report criminal activity to immigration authorities, potentially increasing safety by removing individuals illegally residing in the country.
The recent federating of Washington’s metropolitan police department places it under the oversight of Attorney General Pam Bondy. While temporary federal oversight of local police is permissible in emergencies, the legality of this move may face judicial scrutiny, as it remains uncertain whether the current situation qualifies as an emergency.
National Guard units began arriving in Washington on Wednesday. Typically, these troops are reserved for state and federal operations, responding to directives from state officials. Interestingly, Trump has previously mobilized National Guard troops from California to address immigration-related unrest, bypassing California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom.
As controversies unfold, Democrats have criticized Trump’s tactics, equating his actions to those of a dictator. One notable remark came from Senator Adam Schiff, who highlighted that Trump’s prior deployment of military resources for deportations in Los Angeles has now extended to Washington. He cautioned that citizens should remain vigilant about these developments.
