Matthew Stafford’s Back Injury Recovery Under Observation
Matthew Stafford’s journey to recover from a back injury is about to face a significant test.
On Thursday, Rams coach Sean McVay shared with the media that Stafford, grappling with a worsening disc issue, will participate in training on Saturday morning.
The quarterback missed practice on Wednesday, as well as the joint practice with the Saints on Thursday.
After Thursday’s practice, McVay noted that Stafford’s training on Saturday would mirror last week’s efforts, expressing hope that the two-time Pro Bowler would show progress in his recovery this time around.
“If it goes well, hopefully [his back] will respond a little better,” McVay told the press.
McVay further remarked that he believes Stafford’s condition is a blend of pain management issues and his overall back function.
“But we are trying to progress too, so I hope he’s moving toward getting back on the field,” he added.
Last Saturday, Stafford completed 68 passes at the Rams’ facility, indicating no restrictions on his throwing capabilities.
McVay mentioned that the next logical step for Stafford would be to engage in individual drills during practice on Monday; however, the 37-year-old ultimately did not take part.
According to McVay, Stafford “feels good,” but he hasn’t felt significantly improved two days after training last Saturday. He noted it really depended on how Stafford felt upon waking up.
The head coach mentioned that there has been no dialogue about potential surgery for Stafford, clarifying, “That wasn’t the conversation we had.”
“I’m not on that path yet regarding those types of discussions,” McVay continued. “We talked a lot about the best way to approach it, but that wasn’t something that was on the table.”
Entering his 17th NFL season, Stafford threw for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last year, contributing to a 10-7 record and an NFC West title for the Rams.
