Gun permit process in D.C. reduced to days due to federal task force under Trump

Trump’s Crime Crackdown in Washington, D.C.

President Trump is making changes to crime enforcement in Washington, D.C., particularly focusing on simplifying gun permit processes for residents adhering to the law. This initiative aims to help them protect themselves more easily.

The process for obtaining hidden carry permits and registering firearms has been shortened significantly, dropping from several months to just days. This effort is part of a broader initiative launched under an executive order in March, designed to rejuvenate the capital and address safety concerns. While the project does not modify local gun laws, it simplifies what’s already in place, making navigation through the system easier for law-abiding citizens.

“President Trump is not just tackling violent crime in D.C.; he’s also streamlining the permitting for those who follow the law and wish to safeguard their families,” said White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers. “The safe and beautiful task force has collaborated with local leaders to remove barriers, cutting the permit processing time down to about five days.”

Thanks to these efforts, locals can now book appointments to register firearms at the Metropolitan Police Department the next day, and walk-in appointments are also being advertised online.

Previously, applicants faced a lengthy wait of around four months to register their firearms, according to a White House official.

The D.C. City Council recently voted to enhance locations for fingerprinting, which could further streamline this process. However, Washington, D.C., maintains some of the strictest gun regulations in the nation, including mandatory reapplications for permits every two years, restrictions on certain types of firearms, and a long list of gun-free zones, including schools and public transport.

Efforts are underway, led by the task force, to assess how access to firearms can be increased in the city. This could potentially include allowing firearms in bags and considering how concealed carry permits from other states could be recognized, though these ideas need the city council’s approval.

Under an executive order, a diverse group, including members from federal agencies, is working to enhance safety and restore order in D.C. This task force is focused on crime reduction, maintaining respect for historical sites, and overall improvement of the city.

In response to a spike in violent incidents, Trump has called for additional federal law enforcement presence in D.C. His executive order initiated the federalization of the police forces, leading to the deployment of National Guard troops to assist in maintaining order and safety.

Trump categorized the federalization as a significant move for the city, aiming to establish better control and safety in the capital. “We’re going to reclaim the authority granted to me and ensure that the police can do their job effectively,” he stated.
