Obama Speaks Out on Democracy Challenges in Texas
Former President Barack Obama participated in a Zoom meeting with Texas Democrats recently, expressing concern over what he described as a “systematic attack on democracy” by the state’s Republican leaders.
“What we all realize is that there is a systematic attack on democracy, and we cannot just stand by,” Obama stated during the call.
He continued, “My hope is that instead of competing for a pre-determined outcome based on how districts are drawn, we can find a better way to approach this issue, ideally with the court’s assistance.” This comment comes in light of recent political maneuvers in Texas.
A Texas Democrat left the state two weeks ago, aiming to disrupt the GOP’s plan to vote on a new constituency map that would grant them five additional seats by 2026. Obama urged Texas Democrats to take a stand against the GOP’s influence.
In a post, he expressed pride in the Texas Democratic caucus, saying, “I’m very proud of the work they did. The commitment to spotlight current threats to democracy sets an example for all of us.”
On the same day, Democrats laid out conditions for their return to Texas. They insisted that the Texas Legislature should halt its special session aimed at voting on gerrymandered maps and that the California Legislature should propose its own map to counter the Texas GOP’s strategies.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a special election this November that would sidestep California’s independent district committee. This new map could help secure five additional Democratic seats by counteracting the GOP’s influence. Newsom is also urging New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to pursue similar actions.
In response to Obama’s remarks, the Texas House Democratic Caucus stated, “Your words reminded us why we broke quorum. Democracy is not about complacency; it requires active participation and effort to protect it.”
Obama emphasized that the risks to democracy extend beyond gerrymandering. He remarked, “Currently, we face not just challenges from gerrymandering but also voter suppression and attempts to undermine election outcomes, along with actions that seem to bypass Congress and the people’s representatives.” He noted that these developments pose serious threats to the democratic principles we hold dear.
At a June event in Hartford, Connecticut, Obama candidly discussed the dangers to democracy under the current administration, suggesting that the political climate during President Trump’s tenure was “consistent with dictatorship.” He expressed concern about a trend toward normalizing such behaviors, stating, “We’re not completely there yet, but I think we’re dangerously close.”
