The family of Sarah Dunn, a nurse from Texas, has posted a new photo of her smiling while in a hospital bed, calling her recovery from a severe illness a “miracle.”
“She’s improving quicker than we anticipated,” remarked her uncle, Kang Le, on Facebook, three weeks after her airlift from Japan to the U.S. on a critical care flight.
Dunn, 27, fell ill just two days after her honeymoon, landing in the hospital with acute liver failure. Her family had been warned she might never regain consciousness from her coma.
However, it seems that the newlyweds are now on the mend.
“We genuinely believe Sarah’s recovery has been miraculous. She’s making strides faster than expected, and we’re incredibly thankful for the exceptional care from the staff at Methodist Hospital and the liver specialists at Methodist Transplant Hospital,” Kang shared.
“Her liver is stable, but some variations are anticipated, and her medical team will keep a close watch.”
“One significant achievement has been her ability to remember and communicate with family and friends. Each day, she is gaining physical strength and showing promising improvement.”
Kang noted that Sarah will soon be transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston as she moves on to the next phase of her recovery.
“We are extremely thankful for the progress she has made and remain hopeful for what’s next,” he added.
On May 1st, Kang updated that his niece had been taken off life support and was starting to walk “little by little” with help, though her memory and emotions are inconsistent.
Dunn had endured a 20-hour flight back to San Antonio, where her family discovered she had suffered a stroke and “severe bilateral brain damage.”
“At that point, they warned that she might not wake up or regain her previous functions,” her family reported.
Dunn had fallen ill shortly after her wedding to Luke Gradle, which took place in Houston’s Spring Branch neighborhood on March 21, described by her as a “dream wedding.” The couple flew to Tokyo on April 8.
“Upon arriving at the hotel on April 8, she started to feel unwell. Since we had spent 16 days in Japan, we decided to take a half day off to rest,” Gradle, 28, who aspires to be a pilot, explained.
“But on April 9, her condition quickly worsened, and we rushed her to the hospital just before midnight. The next day, she was moved to the ICU due to a critical decline in her health.”
Apparently, she fell ill despite there being no signs of any issues during the wedding.
