Trump Prepares for Summit with Putin in Alaska
President Donald Trump is looking ahead to his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing his hopes and potential outcomes for the summit during a conversation on Air Force One.
On Friday, Trump mentioned, “We’re going to meet with Putin in Alaska,” emphasizing that he believes things will go smoothly. However, he added, “Or else I’m going to come back really early.”
The summit comes amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has tragically taken many lives over the past two years. Anchorage, Alaska, was chosen as the meeting location, sitting conveniently between Washington and Moscow.
This marks the first significant summit between the United States and Russia since the Ukrainian war began, and it’s a notable visit for Putin, who hasn’t been on US soil for nearly a decade.
If the talks do not yield productive results, Trump has made it clear he would not hesitate to walk away. “Yeah, I’m going to walk,” he responded when prompted about his intentions if negotiations soured.
Trump warned of “very harsh” consequences if there isn’t meaningful progress towards peace. He indicated that additional sanctions may be implemented if the meeting does not go as planned. Yet, he remains optimistic, sharing, “I think we’re trying to do very well.”
He expressed confidence about the state of the US economy, stating, “Our country is doing very well. We are setting economic records like never before, including the stock market at record highs. We are taking trillions of dollars through tariffs.”
