Ninth Circuit Reverses California's Limit on Buying One Gun Each Month

Ninth Circuit Overturns California’s “One Gun” Restrictions

On Thursday, the U.S. Ninth Circuit issued a ruling that reverses California’s limitations on purchasing firearms, specifically the “one gun” rule.

The case, known as Nguyen v. Bonta, includes plaintiffs from the Second Amendment Foundation and the Firearms Policy Coalition, alongside six individuals, including members from the San Diego County Gun Owner PAC and two licensed gun dealers.

Under the previous law, individuals could only buy one handgun or semi-automatic centerfire rifle from a licensed dealer within a 30-day period. This restriction had raised significant concerns among gun advocates.

A ruling from Judge Daniel Forrest on June 20, 2025, declared that this state law violated the Second Amendment. It emphasized that the right to obtain firearms should not be limited in such a manner, suggesting that this requirement was not consistent with historical norms surrounding firearm regulation.

The August 14 ruling solidifies the reversal of the previous 30-day purchasing limit.

Alan Gottlieb, the founder and vice president of the Second Amendment Foundation, remarked that the Ninth Circuit’s decision is a significant step in reclaiming the Second Amendment rights for all Americans.
