Mike Vrabel’s Tense Exchange with Reporters in Minnesota

Things took a turn for the intense in Minnesota involving Mike Vrabel.

The rookie head coach of the Patriots, known for his frankness, had a somewhat anxious interaction with the media on Thursday. A reporter delved into comments made by star receiver Stefon Diggs regarding his availability for the upcoming season.

“Did you actually believe that, Phil? You’re a smart guy. I’m not sure where you went to school—probably not in Ohio—but do you genuinely believe it?” Vrabel questioned, hinting at skepticism about the inquiry.

Phil Perry from NBC Sports Boston responded, clarifying, “I’m not trying to trick you. Diggs mentioned he wasn’t certain about being ready for the first week.”

Diggs, who recently signed a three-year, $63.5 million contract with the Patriots, was recovering from a torn ACL he sustained during his time with the Texans last October.

On a recent podcast, the four-time Pro Bowler expressed feeling “great” and mentioned he was optimistic about being ready for week one, when the Patriots face the Raiders on September 7th.

Vrabel acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Diggs’ status. “[He’s] here almost every day,” he noted. He added, “I’m looking forward to seeing where he is, but we’ll truly find out when the time comes. He’s practicing today, and hopefully, he’ll be a factor in the red zone.”

Last season, Diggs managed three touchdowns in eight games before his injury. He was traded to Houston in April 2024, having consistently surpassed 1,000 yards and achieved a career-high 11 touchdowns during his four seasons with the Bills.

The Patriots are looking for a turnaround after a challenging 4-13 season, and much hinges on the performance of second-year quarterback Drake May, who is hoping to build on his promising rookie performance. The third overall pick of the 2024 draft threw 15 touchdowns against ten interceptions in 13 games.

As Vrabel, a Super Bowl-winning linebacker turned head coach, adapts to his role, he’s also been proactive in addressing reporters. During training camp in July, he criticized a reporter for repeating questions, emphasizing the need for better engagement.
