Toronto Maple Leafs Face Questions After General Manager Hire
The Toronto Maple Leafs found themselves in a tough spot with their fans this past Tuesday.
During a press conference, Toronto Sun reporter Steve Simmons posed a challenging question to Keith Perry, the Maple Leafs’ president and CEO. He was seated next to the newly appointed general manager, John Chayka, and it seemed Perry was at a loss for words.
Simmons brought up the due diligence process regarding Chayka’s hiring, saying, “In the last three or four days, I reached out to around 20 people in the NHL, many of whom are pretty well-known. Out of those, only one supported John’s hiring. The other 19 thought it was a joke. They used words like ‘cheaters, liars, salesmen.’ How did you come to a different conclusion so quickly?”
Perry’s response? “I’m sure you spoke to many people.” It felt a bit evasive, and Simmons quickly pressed him for more: “That’s it? The hockey community is shocked by this news. What’s your take?”
While Perry mentioned that there had been “meticulous due diligence and a thorough process,” he didn’t offer any specifics.
It was a curious situation, especially considering some oddities surrounding Chayka’s past. He became the youngest general manager in NHL history at age 26 with the Arizona Coyotes, but abruptly left the position in 2020 after facing suspension from the league for rule violations regarding discussions with the New Jersey Devils.
Interestingly, Simmons recounted a story about Chayka from his time with the Coyotes. Apparently, Chayka’s office resembled that of a high-stakes trader, filled with computers displaying what turned out to be misleading data. When the new general manager, Bill Armstrong, arrived, he discovered that most of those screens were functioning incorrectly, leaving him puzzled.
Despite the buzz surrounding the press conference, Chayka didn’t directly answer Simmons’ probing questions. As a result, Maple Leafs’ fans are understandably frustrated with his appointment, especially following a dismal season that marked their worst performance since 2009. Nevertheless, they still have star players like Auston Matthews in the mix, which keeps some hope alive.
