Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is leading Democratic challenger Colin Allred by five points, a shift some attribute to concerns raised by Senator John Cornyn and his associates regarding Paxton’s candidacy.
An Emerson poll surveying 1,000 registered voters in Texas indicates that Paxton is at 46%, while Allred stands at 41% as they both vie for the Republican primary against incumbent Cornyn.
The same poll also assessed Cornyn’s campaign strategy, which is focused on reducing uncertainties around his general election viability and Paxton’s multiple controversies.
The poll has generated considerable buzz among Texas politicians.
However, another Emerson poll, which had a smaller sample size, suggests Cornyn has gained a slight edge, measuring at 30% compared to Paxton’s 29%. But this data appears to be an outlier, as Cornyn has seen declines in other polls throughout the year. Notably, a poll released by the Senate Leader Fund, historically aligned with former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, revealed that Cornyn was trailing Paxton by 16 points as of early May.
Previously reported by Breitbart News in May:
Allred, the Democratic nominee for 2024, was viewed as a formidable opponent for Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), prompting significant financial backing from Democrats for what turned out to be one of the costliest Senate races ever.
The competition between Cruz and Allred remained tight during the campaign, but Cruz eventually won by nearly 10 points.
This unexpected outcome in the Cruz-Allred race seems to lend credibility to the assertions from Paxton and his supporters, suggesting that insiders in Washington may be wary of Paxton’s chances in a general election.
Speculation is also swirling about other potential candidates considering a run in the Republican primary, particularly Ronnie Jackson and Wesley Hunt.
